	Book List Extend student understanding of character traits in action by suggesting books listed by 25 character traits.
	Center for the 4th and 5th R's THE CENTER FOR THE 4TH & 5TH RS sponsors the Smart & Good Schools Initiative in partnership with the Institute for Excellence & Ethics (IEE). The Initiative hosts a K-12 summer institute, conducts on-site character education trainings, carries out research, publishes the *excellence & ethics* education letter, and produces materials that aid schools in implementing the Smart & Good vision. The mission of a Smart & Good school is integrating excellence and ethics—developing performance character (doing our best work) and moral character (doing the right thing) within an ethical learning community.
	Character Counts Natinally active and based in southern California, the institute uses presentations, consultantions, trainings, workshops, and resources to help focus the engergy of people who want to do something to make our society more honest, fair, caring, and accountable. The nationwide Character Counts youth ethics initiative is a project of the institute.

	Character Matters: How to Help Our Children Develop Good Judgment, Integrity, and Other Essential Virtues by Thomas Lickona Preview this book by reading the table of contents, introduction, and selected chapters. Review from Publisher's Weekly states, In his timely follow-up to the definitive Educating for Character, Lickona plucks the burden of moral corruption from society at large and plants it squarely in the laps of parents and teachers. He describes a society nearly bereft of character, and proposes that the solution is to awaken children's social consciences. Through a series of grim statistics and anecdotes from his research as a psychologist and educator, Lickona illuminates a culture that is lost (but not hopelessly), due largely to an overemphasis on academic achievement in lieu of formal character education. 	Character Plus Having good character means understanding, caring about, and acting upon core ethical values such as honesty, respect, and responsibility.CHARACTERplus, an initiative of Cooperating School Districts, is devoted to advancing the cause and importance of character education. This organization is designed to address issues related to student character, responsibility, and academic achievement. CHARACTERplus provides quality training, resources, and leadership to help parents and schools accomplish one of their most important jobs – the character development of the next generation.
	Dr. Forni’s Civility Website Dr. P.M. Forni, a professor at Johns Hopkins University, co-founded the Johns Hopkins Civility Project in 1997. An aggregation of academic and community outreach activities, the JHCP aimed at assessing the significance of civility, manners and politeness in contemporary society. The JHCP has been reconstituted as The Civility Initiative at Johns Hopkins, which Dr. Forni now directs. This Web site is designed to introduce Dr. Forni's work on civility and to offer links to related material.
